Rightly called "nature's jewels", butterflies are the most beautiful of insects, and are an obvious subject for the close-up nature photographer. They have always been my favourite subjects. Many of the pictures in this gallery are of native English butterflies, which were photographed in the natural environment in and around Southampton in southern England. Most of the remainder, especially the larger and more colourful species, were commercially-bred butterflies, photographed in the more controlled conditions of my table-top "studio". Hopefully it is not too obvious which are which!
